Shiretown was opened in 1975 and is part of the MacLeod Group Health Services Ltd. which develops, owns and operates six nursing homes across Nova Scotia since 1981. MacLeod Group head office is located in Antigonish and prides itself in running well-equipped nursing homes with professional experienced staff.

The Homes are committed to provide quality care to each of our residents to meet their spiritual, physical, and social needs while encouraging their independence. We value our staff, who we believe to be the key to our success.

The Home is a unionized environment with two unions – the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union (NSNU). The Home provides service 24 hours per day, seven days per week and as such, there are various 8 hour shifts available. Shiretown offers benefits which include a dental/medical plan, both a short-term and long-term plan, and a pension plan. All staff at all MacLeod Group Homes have access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which allows staff to access professional assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Staff at Shiretown can also benefit from a voluntary program called Ease that assists staff who has suffered a disability unrelated to work. All MacLeod Home are covered under Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB).

There are various in-services and work shops that are organized and/or funded by the Home to provide education opportunities to the staff in the different departments. Staff help plan social activities throughout the year from pot lucks to parties.
